What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that influences the way the body to produce or respond to the hormone insulin. Insulin acts like a key that allows the perfect measure of glucose into every cell. In patients who are diabetic, this procedure doesn’t work correctly.

Different types of diabetes

There are three distinct types of diabetes, each with a particular process.

  • Type-1: the pancreas produces little or no insulinwhich is ahormone needed to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy. The immune system attacks the insulin-delivering cells and devastates them. This type typically develops more often during childhood.
  • Type-2 : Type-2 diabetes is an issue with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to ascend higher than normal. This type of diabetes is most common and typically happens later in life as the cells age and are impervious to insulin, called insulin resistence. The pancreas tries to deliver enough insulin to counteract, so rather than sugar entering the cells for energy, it develops the blood.
  • Gestational: this type of diabetes develops during pregnancy. The placenta delivers a hormone that can make cells impervious to insulin. The condition will resolve itself after the baby is born.

What are the treatment options for diabetes?

Dr. Manella will create a tailored approach to your specific health, and will include changes to your lifestyle as well as medication.

Diabetes treatment is a balance that is carefully controlled and will take time. It can also change over time so ongoing monitoring is required.
